History, art and culture

are just some of the elements that distinguish our region.

Valdarno is the land that birthed prominent personalities such as the famous painter Tommaso di ser Giovanni di Mone Cassai, known as Masaccio.

A valley which is welcomed and held by imposing headlands and which, in winter, is cradled by the sweet lullaby of wind. Travelling among the immensely rich splendour of the Arno valley, you can savour the warm scents of the vines, venture among glorious landscapes and, thanks to numerous artistic and monumental beauties, get lost in interesting time travel.

The valley of the River Arno

Valdarno is a land of warm colours crossed by the limpid Arno. The river begins on Monte Falterona and, in the warmer months, its calm and melodious flow offers a backdrop that is well suited to long relaxing walks.

A glorious valley surrounded by the natural embrace of the imposing Chianti and Pratomagno ridges that are covered with beech, Turkey oak and chestnut trees.

Set among the Balze

The right bank of the Arno is dotted with majestic reliefs of clayey and sandy debris, formed by centuries-old erosion following the drying up of Lake Pliocenico: the Balze are precious fruits of the earth that also fascinated the genius Leonardo da Vinci.

Extraordinarily beautiful villages

The historic villages that populate the Valdarno are characterized by medieval structures and monuments: towers, parish churches and castles. Places that are rich in archaeological finds and traces of archaic settlements. Roman constructions, such as the Pogi bridge, as well as Etruscan legacies such as the uniquely interesting trails that skirt the hilly ridges.. Each traveller to Valdarno is enveloped in a timeless atmosphere of warmth that arises on the edge of the Ambra torrent and, encircling every village, district and lane, expands to the point at which the Chianti mountains and the valley Upper Arno are intertwined in a marvellous embrace.

Pratomagno

The Pratomagno massif, a mountainous area that is about 30 km long, presents itself as a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The massif is made up of hundreds of kilometres of marked trails to be covered on foot, by bike or on horseback; the trails also offer opportunities to gather mushrooms and berries. A panorama of constantly changing scenery: a soft shades of green sprinkled with flowers in spring, intense yellow in summer, the warm colours of autumn, the snow and clear skies of winter. But nature is not the only inhabitant of this mountain: in the evening, the mountain sides are illuminated with the lights of characteristic villages that are part of the history of ancient Tuscany.

Dry stone walls

Adorning the verdant countryside of Valdarno, the dry stone walls have been recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The walls are works of true genius: they are ancient structures made up of stones that were carefully selected and positioned one on top of the other and which are held together by nothing other than the mastery of the builder and perhaps a little “dry land.” Exemplary testimony of a harmonious coexistence between man and nature, these characteristic structures have played a fundamental role in shaping the region: to this day they help to prevent landslides, floods and avalanches.
