Perched on a hill on the edge of the large alluvial plain, crossed by the river Arno, Laterina is one of the medieval villages characteristic of the Valdarno. The Center, animated by historical and artistic re-enactments is an open-air museum, with its historical buildings, such as the tower and the palace of the Guinigi family, the Church of Saints Ippolito and Cassiano, the sixteenth-century oratory of San Rocco and La Rocca.

The historic center welcomes the Municipal Theatre, recently restored and reopened to the public, is home to theatrical performances. Coming down from the hill you can admire two other important churches dedicated to the Madonna which are the Church of Santa Maria in Valle and the Church of Madonna della Neve.

The Etruscan Roman civilization has left significant footprints on this territory, always crossed by important roads. Even the name Pergine seems of Etruscan origin. Among the witnesses of the past stands out a sheet of lead on which appears an inscription addressed to the gods of the waters “aquae ferventes” whose cult was inspired by the pollas that boil on the surface around here. In modern times, the powerful carbon dioxide-laden fumaroles of the springs of Poggio Bagnoli were experienced in the industrial exploitation for the recovery of carbon dioxide.
